8,9 and 10 April - Belgium to Prague (Czech Republic)

Woken up by the rooster at 4.15am, as normal when at home, I sat in the stables with the horses but the sun did not come up with it being one hour ahead of the UK and no too bright a morning. I was warm in the sleeping bag and not too uncomfortable. This was called ‘bush camping’ which meant no water or conveniences. I did manage to clean my teeth and wash my face in the morning by using the horse bucket. It couldn’t make me smell any worse! The toilet facilities consisted of a shovel and to dig where one wanted, no paper was to be left anywhere. After a breakfast of porridge, toast, tea and coffee we left at 6.45am for where-ever! The farmer gave us a load of fresh eggs, as fresh as they could be found round the yard.

I found a pot of pretzels and a bag of small Easter eggs in my bag. The pretzels had fallen out of the pot and were everywhere and the eggs were shared with the girls sitting near me on the truck. We drove until 17.30hrs and then proceeded up a one track road looking for somewhere to stop overnight. A six move turn at the end of the road had us going back down the road to a small clearing where the truck could be parked and the tents put up in the forest. We had to clear away the dead wood and debris to find a clear space to pitch each tent. The toilet tent was put up as well and which covered a hole dug in the ground. Apparently we were somewhere south of Erfuet and a cold place it was.

In the morning I could not find the zipper on my pocket and when I did I could not work the zipper as my fingers were too cold even wearing the fingerless gloves. We left early again with the girls rapped up in their woollens and one in a sleeping bag trying to get warm. There is no heating in the truck! At the Belgium border some of the men threw snowballs at each other as there was plenty of snow about. On arrival in Prague we booked in at the campsite (Brezineves-Ludivi) and then went to Tesco to buy food and bits. For some the bits consisted of sleeping mats and cheap sleeping bags to put inside the ones they had as some of the others were very cold at night. No-one had brought their Tesco card even though some were asked for it! After the evening meal, more pasta, we went to the pub just outside the campsite where beer was £1.20 a pint and tasty red wine was £1 for a very large glass. It was agreed that we would go up tomorrow night as well.

On Tuesday 10 April was all went into Prague for the day and I ended up walking for over six hours. As we went along the group kind of split up until there were three main groups that kept seeing each other as we went around as there is quite a small centre to the city. There were plenty of old cars around such as Trabants, Skodas and Praga, and quite impressive they were to see and still in use mainly taking tourist for rides round the sites at a horrible expensive fee. We did the normal things, the Easter Markets, Wenceslas Square, Charles Bridge the Yltava River and St. Nicholas Church, The Old town Hall and the Castle on the hill where we saw the midday changing of the guard. It was generally agreed the the standard of marching was terrible, one guardsman was seen to have a hole in his tunic but the music was good even though there were only six musicians. The musicians did not march or be outside with the guard but played from the windows overlooking the courtyard, with the windows open before someone asks!

I am having problems with the photos so will have to do them another time. It is I am having problems with the photos so will have to do them another time. It is 2300 hrs now and we have to be up at 0500 hrs to leave at 0700 hrs for Budapest. I hope that this goes through without a problem as it is the second time I have tried, the first time I lost all the photos.
